Callaway X Forged 21 UT Utility Iron Review
Technology
Callaway X Forged 21 UT utility irons are made with a hollow body forged from 1025 mild carbon steel to provide the soft feel golfers love. Also included are Callaway’s patented urethane microspheres that absorb unwanted vibration for better feel without sacrificing speed.
Flash Face Cup architecture is used, made specific to each loft using artificial intelligence to fine-tune performance in every club. This pattern on the back of the club face generates high ball speed all over the face while maintaining outstanding spin and control.
Callaway further enhanced launch and control in the X Forged utility irons with external metal-injection molded tungsten weighting. This specific weight precisely locates the center of gravity for fully optimized launch and trajectory.
Performance
To test the performance of the Callaway X Forged UT utility irons, we enlisted the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is the head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. We conducted our testing with the 21° utility iron. Rick was swinging this club at an average of 91 mph. We saw an average ball speed of 126.3 mph which was right where you want a long iron to be. With an average launch angle of 15.9° and spin of 4,030 rpm, Rick was reaching an average carry distance of 191 yards.
Who It’s For
Callaway’s X Forged UT irons are made for skilled golfers who want more versatility in their long game. Two specific types of golfers will want to look closely at adding this golf club to their bag. The first is the player who is looking to replace one or two long irons to achieve better gapping and accurate distance control throughout their set. The second is the golfer who wants to replace a higher-lofted hybrid to produce a more penetrating trajectory like a driving iron.
Appearance
The Callaway X Forged 21 UT utility irons feature the confidence-inspiring look of a players’ long iron with a couple of subtle differences. The blade length is longer and the sole is wider when compared to a traditional long iron, designed to give golfers more forgiveness and control. It does set up square to the ball with minimal offset and a clean topline.
Feel & Sound
The sound of the Callaway X Forged utility iron is best described as a higher-pitched crack when you make impact with the golf ball. It is a very solid, pleasing sound. This utility iron also feels nice and soft because of the forged body, hollow head, and urethane microsphere technology.
