Callaway Epic Speed Fairway Wood Review: Shifting Fairways Into a New Speed

Callaway Epic Speed is here to change the way golfers think about fairway woods. With a new round of ball speed technology, Callaway is making their fairways go faster, longer, and straighter. With two options in this lineup to choose from, the Epic Speed or Epic Max, there is a golf club for all types of players. The TGW team brings you our exclusive review with video and an in-depth look at the latest technology.

Technology

Callaway Epic Speed fairway woods feature a brand-new version of their Jailbreak technology called Jailbreak Velocity Blades. These new structures are designed with artificial intelligence to increase the stiffness of the club near the sole and produce more speed. These blades also allow the face to flex more on the crown for more consistent spin. Then the bars are spaced out to reduce twisting for greater forgiveness.

Callaway also employs their latest Flash Face technology in the Epic Speed fairways. Every club face on every model is made with advanced artificial intelligence that is proven to increase ball speed and distance with optimized performance all on shots hit all over the face. The face is forged from high-strength C300 maraging steel. This material is incredibly strong and flexible to help provide more speed and consistent spin across the face.

The Epic Speed model has a forward center of gravity to produce a strong, penetrating ball flight. That along with a redesigned leading edge produces more driver-like performance.

The Epic Max fairway wood features an oversized club head with a shallow face and lower leading edge so you can launch the ball easier. Two movable weights, a 2-gram weight and a 14-gram weight, allow you to swap the heavier and lighter weights into different weight ports to fine-tune performance and ball flight.

Performance

We put Callaway’s newest fairway woods to the test with the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is the head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. Testing began with the Callaway Epic Speed fairway wood. Rick’s average swing speed with this club was 94 mph using the 3-wood. His average ball speed during testing was 140 mph. With a launch angle of 14.1° and average spin of 2,966 rpm, Rick’s average carry distance with the 15° club was 227 yards.

Then we tested the Callaway Epic Max fairway wood. Again Rick used the 3-wood with an average swing speed of 95 mph. He generated an average ball speed of 138 mph. The Epic Max did launch higher than the Epic Speed with an average launch angle of 15.2°. Spin was similar but just a little bit lower with an average of 2,881 rpm. All together, Rick’s average carry distance was 224 yards.

Who It’s For

The Callaway Epic Speed fairway wood is a good fit for golfers of all ability levels. Without moving weights, all of the technology and performance is built right into the club. All you need to do is put a solid swing on the golf ball to experience the speed, distance, and accuracy of Epic Speed.

The Callaway Epic Max fairway wood is designed for golfers who are looking for more forgiveness. The oversized head and changeable weights allow you to adjust the center of gravity and launch conditions to be more stable and help you stay on target.

Appearance

Callaway’s Epic Speed fairway woods feature the same visual cues as the drivers to create sleek-looking golf clubs. They feature a flat black crown that eliminates all distractions when placed down by the golf ball. Callaway accented the clubs with signature pops of green that make them recognizable as Callaway without being flashy.

Feel & Sound

Much like the drivers, the Callaway Epic Speed and Epic Max fairway woods feel and sound solid. They provided great feeling turf interaction as well. They are pleasing to hit and responsive to let you know you have made solid contact with the golf ball. The sound is metallic but muted which Rick described as phenomenal and pleasing.
