Callaway Epic Flash Sub Zero Customer Review – The Epic is Back

Callaway stepped their game up with feel and the look of the Rogue Series last year. This year, the face of the driver has gotten even better, and hotter!

Technology

In 2017, “Jailbreak Technology” essentially changed the Callaway driver game forever when the Epic Driver was introduced. This year, they brought the Epic Series back and added even more technology. The new “Flash Face” was designed by A.I. (Artificial Intelligence), where team Callaway taught a super-computer to come up with their best face for increased ball speeds across the face, including more forgiveness and less spin with a higher launch. If you are looking for even less spin, the Sub Zero head would be for you.

Basically, they’ve figured out how to get the ball in the air, sooner, higher, and with less spin. When struck solidly, the ball flight will be unlike any other you’ve seen come off your golf club before.

Appearance

When compared to the original Epic, the Flash seems to have a little more rounded body to it, and I think is a little more aesthetically pleasing to the eye this year. Also, it seems to have a deeper face from the address position. The composite finish to the top of the head is unique to Callaway golf and I think gives the user a confident feeling.

At address, the Callaway “v” symbol on the crown gives the golfer a great alignment aid when setting up the face square to the target and centering the golf ball. The face is very square, but doesn’t have a “boxy” look to it, and that’s something I feel most golfers would love about it, too.

Feel

The only small issue I have had with this driver is that it feels so completely different to any other driver I have hit previously, as well as a different sound. This did take some getting used to, and after I spent a few sessions in a simulator and with a trackman, I changed a few things that weren’t quite right with my swing, and it did feel a little “better,” or more familiar to how a driver is supposed to feel.

Callaway has never been known to really have a loud impact sound, and I’ve always felt that their faces were a little soft. That is not the case with the Epic Flash and Sub Zero heads. You can tell they’ve changed the makeup of their face. This isn’t just the same old driver, promising new technology.

Results

To be honest, this is the first Callaway driver I have ever hit for more than a range session. That’s not to say I’ve never liked their equipment, I just liked something better.

Not this year.

Solid strikes are carrying to where my old drivers used to end up, and slight mishits aren’t spinning sideways and actually spin a little less. Once I saw the metrics of my swing, and made a few adjustments, I could instantly feel the difference off the face and truly believe this might be the hottest driver on the market, when struck well. However, when it is not struck near the center, you will most definitely be able to feel it through the face, but get a better result out of it regardless.
