Callaway Apex DCB 21 Irons Review by TGW
Technology
The Callaway Apex DCB 21 irons are made differently because they are made to be the most forgiving Apex irons ever. They feature a deep cavity back and enhanced sole width to make launch easier and improve turf interaction out of all types of lies. With greater perimeter weighting, now more golfers than ever can play a forged iron with confidence.
These new irons are also some of the first forged Apex irons to include Callaway’s signature A.I.-designed Flash Face Cup. Each club face has a specific architecture created by artificial intelligence to produce high ball speed and more robust spin in each specific loft. This creates explosive distance and pinpoint control all over the face, even when you do not hit the golf ball on the sweet spot.
Callaway also employs their Tungsten Energy Core in the DCB model. Each of the long and mid irons features up to 50 grams of tungsten weight. This added weight helps precisely position the center of gravity in each iron for improved launch and added forgiveness on off-center hits.
The Apex DCB 21 irons are forged from 1025 mild carbon steel. In addition to using this soft material, Callaway included their patented urethane microspheres to improve sound and offer an even softer feel without slowing down the club face for the ideal blend of explosive distance, high launch, enhanced forgiveness, and remarkable forged feel.
Performance
To test the performance of the Callaway Apex DCB 21 irons, we enlisted the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is the head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. We conducted our test using the 7-iron which Rick swings at an average of 84 mph. Rick averaged a slightly higher ball speed with the DCB model than the standard Apex version at 114.9 mph. This could be attributed to a slight reduction in spin as well with his average spin rate clocking in at 4,962 rpm. Overall, Rick averaged a high launch of 19.3° which all added up to an average carry distance of 164 yards. He also noted that his dispersion averaged out to be around 9 yards left of center so the added offset in these clubs to do make them a little more draw-biased.
Who It’s For
The Callaway Apex DCB 21 irons are a great fit for golfers who want more forgiveness. This set of irons truly does put the Apex brand in the hands of more players who probably have not used them in the past. They are the game improvement model in the Apex family. Greater forgiveness, easy launch, and added offset make these irons a top performer for golfers of all ability levels who want to experience soft, forged feel.
Appearance
The Callaway Apex DCB 21 irons look remarkably similar to the Apex 21 irons. They feature many of the same contours and shapes, just in a little bit larger version for the cavity back player. The DCB model also features more offset than the other iron sets in the Apex 21 family.
Feel & Sound
Rick described the feel of the Callaway Apex DCB 21 irons as phenomenal. These golf clubs feel like you expect a forged iron to feel and that is what the Apex name has become known for. They also feel great going through the turf smoothly with a sole geometry that helps prevent digging. Because these are fully forged irons, the sound is a little bit muffled and quieter than other irons.
