Brand new from TaylorMade as a complement to the other family members in the P700 iron series are the P790 irons, which might just prove to be the most versatile iron in TaylorMade’s lineup. After all, these are irons that have a forged construction and new technology that’s helping to offer incredible feel, and they also feature clean, compact head designs with thinner toplines and minimal offset. But at the same time, the P790 irons are delivering incredible distance numbers, impressive forgiveness, and effortlessly high launch conditions. That combination will make these irons a popular option for a wide range of players from an ability level, which was the goal, as TaylorMade engineers wanted to give golfers the players iron look they love with the game-improvement playability they need. The P790 irons also feature a unique construction. While they look like blades, each iron features a hollow construction and clubhead that has been filled with SpeedFoam, a new technology from TaylorMade. The SpeedFoam fills the cavity and offers soft, responsive feel at impact, but it also supports an ultra-thin 1.75mm clubface that utilizes inverted cone technology to create faster ball speeds from all impact points. The hollow construction along with the use of tungsten weighting also enables an optimal CG position through the set to maximize performance and MOI with each club. Also of note, the cut-thru Speed Pocket on the sole of the club offers improved flexibility to promote consistent distance and protects ball speed on low-face strikes. P790 irons are being offered with two stock shaft options, the True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 steel or the UST Recoil 780 or 760 ES graphite, while the stock grip is the Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360.

Low- and mid-handicap golfers. While the P790 has the look of a true players iron, it offers the distance, launch, and forgiveness that will make it an attractive option for more than just low-handicap players who value its classic shape and soft, forged feel. Additionally, there’s enough workability and control implemented into the design that this is also an iron that will work for extremely talented ball-strikers, as is evidenced by the fact that several P790 long irons are already in play on the PGA Tour. All said, this iron would easily qualify as the most versatile of the P700 series and is sure to end up in the bags of golfers with very different player profiles.
TGW customer Cliff offers his thoughts after hitting the new TaylorMade P790 irons.
Allows weight to be positioned throughout the clubhead to establish higher MOI, higher launch conditions, and faster ball speeds.
SpeedFoam that fills the hollow head supports an ultra-thin clubface for more ball speed across the face while also promoting incredibly soft feel.
Helps create increased launch angles while also providing more ball speed protection on shots struck low on the clubface.
“With P790, we created a forged distance iron that meets the demands of better players and delivers consistent performance for the aspirational golfer. By combining our new SpeedFoam with a wrapped face construction, we have engineered an iron that is as beautiful as it is powerful.”
Tomo Bystedt, TaylorMade Senior Director of Global Irons
“I was incredibly impressed. This is the best feeling and launching iron I think I’ve ever hit. The numbers with this 790 iron compared to what I’m hitting now are not even comparable. Every metric on Trackman was better with the 790 than the current irons I play. I absolutely could see myself getting a set of these.”
