Q & A

Callaway Men's Steelhead XR Hybrid

Distance, Forgivness, Playability: Everything You Need In A Hybrid

As a complement to the new Steelhead XR irons, Callaway is also offering a line of Steelhead XR hybrids. And like the irons, the XR hybrids were designed to deliver exceptional forgiveness, amazing distance, and enhanced launch conditions. The impressive distance that the Steelhead XR hybrids produce is the result of a larger clubface and a new Hyper Speed Face Cup, which promote faster ball speeds even on shots struck from the heel or toe. Also adding to the distance these hybrids generate is the use of a Speed Step on the crown, technology utilized in Callaway’s XR drivers to reduce air drag and promote faster clubhead speeds. The Steelhead XR hybrids also feature a larger clubhead in which the center of gravity has been placed low and deep to promote higher launch conditions and improved stability. Forgiveness, meanwhile, is enhanced by a longer blade length and deeper body shape, which combine to increase the XR’s hitting area and MOI. Steelhead XR hybrids are offered in lofts of 19, 22, 25, and 28 degrees and come standard with Matrix Ozik F15 graphite shafts, although other options are available as well.

Ideal For:

Players of all ability levels, although the performance attributes of the Steelhead XR hybrids would most typically appeal to mid- and high-handicap golfers. Better golfers, however, could easily be drawn to how easy it is to launch these hybrids, which is crucial from a playability standpoint with a hybrid, as well as how forgiving they are. The overall size was also intended to inspire confidence. That said, the larger overall footprint will also make it slightly more difficult to work the ball with the Steelhead XR hybrids, so players who value workability above all else in a hybrid might also want to consider Callaway’s Apex hybrid.

Hyper Speed Face Cup

The Callaway Steelhead XR hybrids feature a larger club face with next generation Hyper Speed Face Cup Technology designed to deliver faster ball speeds and greater distance, even when you don't strike the face dead center.

Speed Step Technology

Designed with the help of aerodynamics experts, the Steelhead XR Hybrids feature Speed Step Technology on the crown of the golf clubs to produce faster club head speed for even more distance.

Redesigned Club Head Shape

The club head in the Steelhead XR Hybrids has been designed with a larger overall profile. The larger club head allows the center of gravity to be placed low and back for easier, higher launch to help generate more distance. The longer blade length and slightly deeper body create a larger hitting area for more forgiveness.

What They're Saying...

“With the original X-14 (irons), when we came out with that, we didn’t have a hybrid. Now, as set make-ups have evolved, it’s really important to have hybrids to complement irons.”

Luke Williams, Callaway Senior Director of Global Product Strategy for Fitting and Irons

“This face is longer heel to toe; it’s deeper from the face to the back. That does a few things. It increases the MOI, makes the clubhead more forgiving, makes it easier to get the ball up in the air. The longer face makes the face a little bit hotter, especially on off-center hits. Overall, it’s a more forgiving product that people will look down at and be comfortable hitting.”

Luke Williams, Callaway Senior Director of Global Product Strategy for Fitting and Irons

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Longer and more consistent I bought this club about three weeks ago. I had the opportunity to use it a couple of times. I was looking for a hybrid that I could hit for distance and with consistency. I am almost 65 years old and do not hit like I did as a younger man. My son and son-in-law were with me on one occasion and both of them got to hit a couple of times. Now both of them are looking for a similar hybrid for their bag. This club is easy to hit and I am really glad that I purchased it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great feel off the club face Bought the hybrid to match my irons. This club did not disappoint. Wonderful weight and feel. My shots have been solid and straight.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice hybrid I hit Callaway XR-OS irons and have found them to be very nice clubs. I have not hit the XR-OS 3H and 4H as well as I do the irons. The concept of the Steelhead XR hybrid having a large hitting area on the face intrigued me. I first bought the Steelhead XR 3H and hit it pretty well. I continued to play better with the Steelhead XR hybrid and have since added the Steelhead XR 4H to my bag. I cannot say it has totally changed my ability, and confidence to hit a solid hybrid, but I am hitting it more consistently with the Steelhead XR hybrid.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautifully crafted I’m a casual golfer looking to improve my game (who’s not?) and as part of that effort I decided to upgrade my older Callaways to the Steelhead XR line of hybrids and irons. First of all, these clubs look great! The feel and balance of each club is perfect. I’ve recently played several rounds and find them to be everything I wanted. Slightly off center hits stay much closer to the line than any other club I’ve used. The sweet spot is larger and more forgiving yielding much longer and more accurate ball flight. The hybrids line up so well visually and feel so balanced that a poor strike is an exception. I only wish I had done this sooner!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet swing I have only been able to use this club a few times given the weather. (I live in central Iliniois.) I can tell, however, that come next spring I will be in love with this club.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first hybrid is money well spent! This is my first hybrid. Still trying to align my game to the #3 Steelhead XR’s potential. I don’t know how far I can consistently hit it. I have just had it in my bag for 2 rounds and briefly at the driving range. For example, recently I hit it just as far as a golfing buddy hit his driver, and this guy is consistently longer (10-20 yds.) when both of us hit driver! The club has a a beautiful look and a wonderful feel and sound. The ball jumps off of the club face and I can draw it at will!
