Titleist 917 Drivers Set The Standard For Complete Performance

Complete performance. From a design standpoint, that is what Titleist engineers set out to accomplish with the new 917 drivers, creating products that offered more forgiveness, faster ball speeds, higher launch angles, reduced spin rates, and unmatched customization. Those performance benefits were accomplished in multiple ways, but SureFit CG just might stand out as most unique among the new innovations, as players can utilize a weight that runs through the clubhead to influence both center of gravity and ball flight. Additionally, different weight options are available to also allow players to adjust swing weight as necessary. Also new with 917 is Radial Speed Face 2.0. The clubface has been thinned out in optimal locations to increase ball speed and maintain higher ball speeds on mis-hits. Also redesigned was the 917’s Active Recoil Channel, as refined thickness in the channel leads to more flexing of the clubface at impact, which promotes greater distance. Finally, Titleist’s game-changing SureFit hosel system is being utilized in 917, giving players the ability to adjust loft and lie independently to achieve their desired ball flight and trajectory. As far as the two different models are concerned, at 440cc the D3 features a slightly smaller profile than the D2. It has a slightly deeper face, which will help reduce spin rates by about 250 RPM when compared to D2. The D3’s smaller profile will also enable more workability for players who like to shape shots. In terms of stock shafts, Diamana Blue and Diamana White, which have long been staples of the Titleist driver lineup, are being offered. However, two new shafts, the Aldila Rogue Max and the Fujikura Speeder Pro TS 74, are also available. Both are low-to-mid launching shafts, with the Speeder being the heavier of the two options. Other custom shaft options are available as well.

Ideal For:

Players of all ability levels who value workability and need to reduce their spin rates with a driver. With its compact, tour-inspired clubhead, the 917 D3 makes it easier to shape shots, while the CG being positioned slightly forward when compared to its D2 counterpart will help reduce spin. That said, this is a driver that is still exceptionally forgiving, and players can expect ball speeds to remain high on mis-hits. However, for those who tend to hit the ball all over the clubface, or for those who struggle with their carry distance, the 917 D2 might be a better fit and warrants further exploration.

The SureFit CG system features interchangeable weights, one neutral and one that can be set to either a draw or fade bias. The 917 D3 driver comes standard with a 12 gram set but can be custom ordered with a set to match your specific swing.
