Titleist Men's 917 D3 Drivers

Titleist 917 Drivers Set The Standard For Complete Performance

Complete performance. From a design standpoint, that is what Titleist engineers set out to accomplish with the new 917 drivers, creating products that offered more forgiveness, faster ball speeds, higher launch angles, reduced spin rates, and unmatched customization. Those performance benefits were accomplished in multiple ways, but SureFit CG just might stand out as most unique among the new innovations, as players can utilize a weight that runs through the clubhead to influence both center of gravity and ball flight. Additionally, different weight options are available to also allow players to adjust swing weight as necessary. Also new with 917 is Radial Speed Face 2.0. The clubface has been thinned out in optimal locations to increase ball speed and maintain higher ball speeds on mis-hits. Also redesigned was the 917’s Active Recoil Channel, as refined thickness in the channel leads to more flexing of the clubface at impact, which promotes greater distance. Finally, Titleist’s game-changing SureFit hosel system is being utilized in 917, giving players the ability to adjust loft and lie independently to achieve their desired ball flight and trajectory. As far as the two different models are concerned, at 440cc the D3 features a slightly smaller profile than the D2. It has a slightly deeper face, which will help reduce spin rates by about 250 RPM when compared to D2. The D3’s smaller profile will also enable more workability for players who like to shape shots. In terms of stock shafts, Diamana Blue and Diamana White, which have long been staples of the Titleist driver lineup, are being offered. However, two new shafts, the Aldila Rogue Max and the Fujikura Speeder Pro TS 74, are also available. Both are low-to-mid launching shafts, with the Speeder being the heavier of the two options. Other custom shaft options are available as well.

Ideal For:

Players of all ability levels who value workability and need to reduce their spin rates with a driver. With its compact, tour-inspired clubhead, the 917 D3 makes it easier to shape shots, while the CG being positioned slightly forward when compared to its D2 counterpart will help reduce spin. That said, this is a driver that is still exceptionally forgiving, and players can expect ball speeds to remain high on mis-hits. However, for those who tend to hit the ball all over the clubface, or for those who struggle with their carry distance, the 917 D2 might be a better fit and warrants further exploration.

What They're Saying...

“We’ve got a lot of momentum with 917 right now. We’ve had some exciting results on Tour, guys that are switching to this product quicker than we’ve ever seen in the past. In just a matter of weeks, eighty percent of our Tour pros have switched to 917 because they’re seeing tremendous results. They’re picking up ball speed, they’re optimizing their spin, and they’re really narrowing their dispersion. It’s exactly what they’re looking for in a driver.”

Josh Talge, Vice President of Marketing for Titleist Golf Clubs

“We’ve seen ball speed increases at a minimum of one mile an hour; we’ve seen as high as five. You’re going to see more ball speed off the face. We’re seeing launches go up because that center of gravity has gone down. The spins, again, are reduced by about 200 RPM. The moment of inertia’s increased, (so) it’s more forgiving on those mis-hits.”

Glenn Mahler, Titleist Performance Institute Fitting Supervisor

“SureFit CG is our first opportunity to really move center of gravity to help the golfer with dynamic face closure. We’re able to impart more speed on the golf ball, give the shot shape they’re looking for to really benefit their game.”

Josh Talge, Vice President of Marketing for Titleist Golf Clubs

“As you look at the D3, very tour-inspired. It’s a 440cc head, a little deeper face, classic pear shape. It’s going to spin about 250 (RPM) less than the D2.”

Josh Talge, Vice President of Marketing for Titleist Golf Clubs

“The 917 in both the D2 and the D3 are going to spin about 200 RPM less. So if a player was a little bit low in trajectory in a 915, it’s probably going to be a little bit (lower) in the same setting in a 917.”

Glenn Mahler, Titleist Performance Institute Fitting Supervisor

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Titleist Driver! I had the Titleist 915 before this and the 917 D3 is more forgiving in my opinion. I had the same shafts in both and find my miss hits aren't as damaging with the 917. Great club, sure fit technology is great and you can customize your fade/draw tendencies. The adjustable hosel just adds to the versatility you can achieve with this club.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome performance I bought this 3 weeks ago as my 913 was underperfoming due to heavy use. What a difference. After fully specking out the shaft and loft I was carrying the ball 20 yds longer than the 913. The titleist line of woods has been very reliable and workable in my game. Highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Distance with control Even with the smaller head (440 cc), I get he same distance because my control is better with much less slice!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great feel with Control I've played Titleist Drivers for over 20 years, but have owned TM and Callaway too. The square set-up at address, in A1 setting, is very appealing to my eye, but you can change that if you like. So you have choices, very nice. The 917 D3 is a superior product to the previous 915 D3 because I can shape the shot both ways, in neutral set-up it favors a slight fade, but i can now hit a draw when required. That was much harder with the previous product. There are longer distance drivers on the market, but the feel is generally harsher which masks when on the club face you have just hit the ball. Control is much better with this generation product, ball backspin is mid-range, and the shaft quality is excellent. Can't go wrong with this Driver.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Titleist Driver I've hit Bought this two weeks ago and bombed it, best driver on the market.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than I expected I had been playing the 910D3 up until recently. Was not looking to change or buy anything new because I really loved my driver. I had tested other drivers throughout the years from most manufacturers but nothing really wowed me. I have never been a single brand fan, I figure if it looks good at address and feels good swinging it you have something. So when the new titleist 917D3 came out I figure I'd check it out for fun. That was costly! I compared my 910D3 with the new 917D3 and I was surprised how good the 917 looked and felt. I hit balls to compare the drivers and on average the spin rate was much lower on the 917 by about 1000 on average and my carry distances were 245yds with 910 and 262yds with 917. (FYI. I was fitted for my 910 years ago and loved everything about the driver so when I was properly fitted with the 917 it looked and felt like my old driver but performed much better unfortunately). To be honest I've only been able to use the 917D3 for one round because we get snow around here. The jury is still out. On the range though I like the way it performs.
