TaylorMade Mens 2017 M1 440 Driver

Enhanced Forgiveness Combined With Industry-Leading Personalization

If there was one knock on the original M1 and M1 430 drivers it was that they lacked forgiveness on mis-hits. Not surprisingly, improving MOI and better ball speed protection were priorities for TaylorMade engineers when it came to redesigning the M1, and those goals have been realized in the new models, which include the M1 440. In terms of differences between the 440 and the 460, in addition to the smaller overall profile, the 440 version also has a slightly deeper face that will give players more workability. Otherwise, the 440 and 460 are quite similar from a technological and construction standpoint. The process of making the M1 440 more forgiving started with the use of 43 percent more carbon in the design of the clubhead. The weight that was saved with that change made it possible to move the CG lower and deeper, a combination that increases MOI and creates higher launch conditions without raising spin rates., which is an ideal recipe for distance. Additionally, the new M1 440 remains as one of the most customizable drivers in golf. It’s T-Track moveable weight system now features more weight to be utilized in the two tracks, and the rear track has been extended to give players even more control over their launch conditions and spin rates. Sound and feel at impact has also been improved in the new M1, as engineers revamped the acoustic management system to align better with the new materials used in constructing the clubhead. As was the case with the original M1, a lightweight adjustable loft sleeve (+/- 2 degrees) enables players to adjust loft and lie angle to further optimize their trajectory and ball flight. M1 440 drivers will feature three stock shaft options: the Fujikura XLR8 56 (high launch, mid-to-high spin), the Mitsubishi Kuro Kage Silver Dual-Core Tini 60 (mid launch, mid-to-low spin), and the Project X HZRDUS Yellow 65 (low launch, low spin). They will be available in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, and 10.5 degrees with a stock length of 45.5 inches and swing weight of D4.

Ideal For:

Players of all ability levels who place a high value on personalization and workability in a driver. An argument could have been made that the original M1 430 was really best suited for stronger, better players, and while the smaller profile of the new M1 440 will likely appeal most to lower-handicappers, this is a much more forgiving driver, which will give a wider variety of players a chance to put it in the bag if they value a compact look and the ability to work the ball more easily.

TaylorMade 2017 M1 Drivers with TGW

Chris Wallace of TGW talks with Brian Bazzel, Director of Product Creation for TaylorMade, about the 2017 M1 Drivers.

New T-Track System

The back track of the new M1 is longer than the original and features a heavier weight, which allows players to even further dial in launch and spin.

Carbon Composite Construction

The use of more carbon in the clubhead created discretionary weight that was used to create a lower, deeper CG placement.

Internal Acoustic Management System

Controls vibration and pitch at impact for enhanced feel and sound.

Lightweight, Aluminum Loft Sleeve

Allows players to adjust loft (+/-2 degrees) and lie angle to create their ideal trajectory and ball flight.

What They're Saying ...

“The M1 is still about personalization but one of the things we did hear and want to address was that it could be more forgiving. Even the best players in the world want more ball speed protection, and the new M1 is considerably more forgiving, which is a dramatic step forward.”

Brian Bazzel, TaylorMade Senior Director of Product Creation for Metalwoods

“Overall, I don’t know that golfers will appreciate the level of advancement in forgiveness in these products. The materials changed, and the construction process in which we put these products together is about ninety percent different. It was all done to make a revolutionary product line even better.”
