Rated 1 out of 5 by from Glitches I have used a sky caddy for years but thought I would try this one. It does not begin to compare with Sky Caddy SGX nor earlier ones. We have a course with at least 8 washes to cross and the Garmin does not give accurate information over and up to the washes. Rather important on this course. Hence it is no better than the watches or the hat gadgets. All the extras such as score cards and club selection are not important. I just need to know how far to lay up or what is the distance to safety. What a waste of money

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Quit working after one month It worked okay at best for a few weeks then it just wouldn’t find a satellite to connect to and refused to stay connected to Wi-Fi for more than a few seconds. It is a giant piece of junk and I don’t recommend it to anyone. Buy a Sky Caddie...they’re more expensive and require an annual membership, but at least they work reliably.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Golf GPS I like these much better than your typical rangefinder. First: Laser rangefinders are by definition "line-of-sight" measurement devices. Well, sometimes you don't have a view of the pin from where you might be--no, and not just when you get way off the fairway, some courses have holes with blind shots to the green. Not an issue for a GPS unit. Second: If you are thinking of laying up, a laser rangefinder may not have anything off which to measure. The touchscreen on the G8, along with the larger size of the screen, makes it easy to pick a spot and get a distance. Third: Some might like that the laser gives them a precise distance to the pin--in theory, that's great. I'm usually able to position the cursor to within a yard or two of their measured distance. More than enough fidelity for most mere mortals--myself included. Now, as for the G8 amongst other GPS units. It has a larger screen without being obtrusive. It is sufficiently brite to be useful even in direct sunlight, comes loaded with tons of courses, and the battery lasts all day--even if your getting two rounds in. Bottom Line: Absolutely a great product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blows sky caddie away Switched the Garmin G8 after being a long time SkyCaddie user. The G8 was a replacement for my SkyCaddie touch, which died after 3 years. I've used this for ca. 10 rounds all over the country since purchase and have been very pleased. It's great to show up at a course when traveling and not have to worry about whether the course is loaded. With the G8 its there and ready to go. Yardages seem very accurate and update quickly. I like the slope feature. I recently played a course that provided slope adjusted yardages for several downhill par 3s and the G8 was right on the money. The pin locater is a cool feature, but I have found it's not as accurate as you'd like. Not sure I'd rely on it on a blind shot. Operation during the round is very simple. The touch screen is sensitive, so it will often advance to the scoring function or other features while clipped to your belt. This is a minor annoyance, but it's easy to get back to the hole. The transfer of scores and stats to the app via blue tooth isn't very reliable. This is not an important feature, so I haven't invested much effort in figuring this out, though. Overall, this is an excellent GPS on the course. The user experience is better than SkyCaddie with no membership fee.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Gps garmin's 8 Not user friendly, does not give precise yardage Product sucks

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good GPS The unit's overall accuracy seems very good, nearly on par with laser rangefinders. My main complaint about the unit is that all the extra features make it pretty complicated; even measuring distance for each club takes more steps than it should. I would gladly trade some of the complexity for simpler operation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great replacement for my G4 Very lightweight, easy to read in the sunlight, improved features. Bought a mount that fits in the golf cart drink holder (at a truck stop), has a long flexable arm, and easily clamps around the G8. The G8 works as well as some of those GPS screens in the golf carts of the very high end clubs. When you turn it on, it recognizes which course and gives yardages for everything (how many yards to clear the water or sand, etc). The ability to keep track of all strokes of your 4-some keeps things honest for drinks at the end of the round. Great product.

Yes it will if you remember to set your start point and register your stop point it will give you the GPS distance between the two points. The G8 will also record the club you used for that shot and over time will give you the average distance you hit that club. That average is used to suggest what club to use in future rounds of golf when you check the remaining distance to the green.

How do the devices that measure shot distance work; how do they do it?

Asked by: mpb323
This is done through GPS and measuring the distance you travel between shots.

Is there a yearly membership with this.

Asked by: Dallas3108
No there isn't a yearly membership. I bought mine this spring because I had a Sky Caddie with yearly membership renewals that I kept up for about five years. My model was obsolete and they no longer serviced it so I decided to switch to the Garmin and I'm glad I did because I no longer have to make sure the course I plan to play is loaded on my golf GPS. With the Garmin the courses are always there, ready to go when I turn it on at the first tee....wherever!
