Q & A

Callaway MD3 Milled Chrome Wedges

3 Grinds. 3 Grooves. Get Up And Down From Anywhere.

In creating the MD3 wedge line, Callaway’s engineers wanted to design wedge options that would work with different types of course conditions, for different types of shots, and for players with different swing characteristics. The end result was the development of three different grinds and three different groove patterns. In terms of the grinds available, the S-Grind (standard) fits the largest number of players by working seamlessly with different swing shapes and turf conditions. The C-Grind (crescent) is most effective for players who have a shallow angle of attack and a good choice from firmer turf and sand conditions. The W-Grind (wide), meanwhile, has a wider sole that makes it easier hit and a great option for players with a steep angle of attack. It’s also a good choice from softer sand and turf conditions. As for the grooves, the pitching and gap wedges (30V grooves), the sand wedges (20V grooves), and the lob wedges (5V grooves) have different groove patterns to control spin, with the grooves becoming more aggressive in terms of spin as the lofts increase. The MD3 series comes in lofts ranging from 46 to 60 degrees, and the Satin Chrome finish is designed not to rust.

Ideal For:

Golfers of all ability levels and playing profiles. There are MD3 wedges that are right for your game; it’s just a matter of properly identifying what you need for your game the courses you play. Once you’ve made that determination, your choice will be clear and you can count on these wedges to perform. And don’t be afraid to use more than one grind in your bag, as that will better prepare you for any shot you might encounter.

Progressive Groove Optimization

The use of different grooves enables golfers to better control their ball. For example, you don’t want full shots with a pitching or gap wedge spinning off the green, thus the use of less aggressive grooves. But on short shots around the green, you want to be able to impart as much spin as possible, which is why more aggressive grooves are utilized in the sand and lob wedges.

Progressive Groove Optimization

Weight Ports

The weight saved by drilling Weight Ports into the back of the flange allows the CG to be positioned where it needs to be in each grind design to make it function as intended.

What They're Saying...

“The most comprehensive line we’ve ever had. We talk about three grooves, three grinds, get up and down from anywhere. We got a lot of feedback from tour players about how much spin they want to have with their gap wedges versus their sand wedge versus their lob wedge. You don’t want a ball that sucks off the green with your gap or your pitching wedge.”

Dave Neville, Callaway Global Director for Woods and Wedges

What Players Like You Are Saying...

“I tried all three grinds. Honestly, I liked all of them; they felt good. But the C was the one I felt I hit the best. I could control the ball even on shorter shots. It just felt a little heavier, which I like.”

TGW customer Bob, 3 handicap, live testing at Callaway, 3/8/16

“I hit the 56, 58, and 60. Overall, I liked the shape of them. I felt like I had a really consistent ball flight. I think the different grinds were interesting. We just hit them off the grass so you could kind of see the different ball flight you get with the different grinds.”

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Control around the Greens I switched from a 60 degree Titleist Vokey Wedge to a 58 degree Callaway MD3 and I love the feel and control from 85 yards in. My Gap Wedge is at 50 degrees and my Sand Wedge sits at 54 degrees of loft, so this fits my full shot gapping beautifully. Look at address is smart and fills me with confidence. Feel is excellent and softer than my Vokey.

Can you compare the C, W and S grinds

Asked by: Sfryjoh
The S-Grind is the standard grind, designed to work with most golfers' swings, those who take a normal, moderate divot and play on a variety of turf conditions. The C-Grind is a crescent shape with heel and toe relief that works best for golfers with a shallow angle of attack, who take smaller divots, and play on firmer turf. The W-Grind is a wider sole, making it a better option for golfers with a steep angle of attack who take deeper divots as well as players on softer turf.
