Callaway Men's Steelhead XR Fairways

An Iconic Shape Infused With Modern Technology

As popular as Callaway golf clubs have been since the company’s inception, none were any more popular than the three models that comprised the original Steelhead fairway wood franchise. In fact, Callaway sold 2.3 million Steelhead fairway woods in the early to mid 2000s, which is a remarkable number. Not surprisingly, many Callaway fans had long hoped for a return of the Steelhead fairway wood, and that wish has now been granted with the release of brand new Steelhead XR fairways. While the new Steelhead XR will have the familiar shape and sole design of the original Steelhead, there have been numerous upgrades made in terms of technology. Most notably, Steelhead XR fairways feature a lightweight J-36 carbon crown, and the weight saved in constructing the crown has been repositioned to create an optimal CG position and enhanced perimeter weighting, the latter of which increases forgiveness. Additionally, as has been a staple in Callaway’s recent fairway wood releases, Steelhead XR fairways feature Face Cup Technology, which leads to faster ball speeds from across the clubface for explosive distance. As mentioned, the new Steelhead fairways also feature Callaway’s popular Hawkeye sole design, which enables effortless launch from the turf and the versatility to play shots from poor lies. Also of note, Steelhead XR fairways have a more forward CG location to reduce spin, and they also have a deeper face than Callaway’s other current fairway wood offerings. Steelhead XR fairway woods feature a bonded hosel design and are available in lofts of 13.5, 15, 16, 18, 20.5, 21, and 24 degrees. They also feature the smooth, mid-launching Mitsubishi Tensei CK Blue as a stock shaft.

Ideal For:

Players of all ability levels but especially those looking for a low-spin fairway wood or one to hit regularly off of a tee. Callaway’s new Steelhead XR fairways generate impressive launch conditions and distance, and they’re easy to hit from the turf thanks to their versatile Hawkeye sole design, which will make them a great option for any golfer. They also, however, have a more forward CG location to reduce spin, as well as a deeper clubface, which will inspire confidence from a tee. All said, when factoring in the technology that the Steelhead XR fairways feature, along with the success of the original Steelhead fairway woods, you can expect to see these in a lot of bags.

What They're Saying ...

“When the Steelhead iron came out last September and immediately went to No. 1 everyone was asking, ‘Where are the fairway woods?’ It was something that we felt we just had to do. And we think there are a lot of people who still play a Steelhead fairway wood or have one in their garage or who played them in the past who are going to want to try this out.”

Dave Neville, Callaway Senior Director of Brand Management for Metal Woods

“The Steelhead has a more forward CG location, so it’s going to have a flatter trajectory. It’s really a low-spin fairway wood when compared to the Epic fairways. And with the deeper face, it’s going to be a rocket launcher off the tee for some players. We like to say it’s iconic versatility with modern power.”

Dave Neville, Callaway Senior Director of Brand Management for Metal Woods

Callaway Men's Steelhead XR Fairways is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A modern twist on a classic I owned a steelhead back in the day and loved the size of the face. This club reminds me of the old steelhead but performs even better!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Whoa! I was expecting high floaters with this 3 wood and instead am hitting mid trajectory bullets. To be clear, this isn't a club that is difficult to get airborne. But holding a green has been challenging because it comes in pretty hot. Still, it's an awful lot of fun to hit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just as good as the original steelhead Love how this club cuts through the rough and gets the ball airborn. Very easy to hit and still has the great sound of the Steelhead family.
