Callaway Men's GBB Epic Fairway Woods

More Distance And Forgiveness Create An Epic Combination

Given all of the attention that Jailbreak Technology has received as it relates to Callaway’s new Epic and Epic Sub Zero drivers, golfers might wonder why the new GBB Epic fairway woods don’t have Jailbreak Technology. The answer is that the shallower height of a fairway clubface won’t allow for the internal titanium rods. That said, to assume that the GBB Epic fairway woods are any less explosive would be a mistake. The driving force behind Callaway’s success in the fairway wood market in recent years has been Face Cup Technology, and the new Fourth Generation Face Cup in the Epic fairways is creating faster ball speeds and also maintaining higher ball speeds on mis-hits. Also key to the design is the use of lightweight triaxial carbon, which is 78 percent lighter than steel, in the crown. The weight saved by using triaxial carbon allowed engineers to move the CG lower and deeper in the clubhead with the result being higher MOI, effortless launch conditions, and lower spin rates. The Epic fairway woods also feature an aerodynamic speed step on the crown, which reduces air drag during the swing and helps players create more swing speed. And finally, differentiating the Sub Zero fairway from the standard Epic fairway is that it features two weight ports in the sole. Players can positions 22- and three-gram weights in either a rear or forward position to fine tune their launch conditions and spin rates. GBB Epic Sub Zero fairway woods are available in lofts of 13.5 (168cc), 15 (159cc) and 18 (156cc) degrees, with each of those models featuring an adjustable loft sleeve that allows players to strengthen loft by a degree or weaken loft by two degrees, as well as create a draw BIAS. Additionally, the stock shaft offerings for the Sub Zero fairways feature options from Fujikura and Aldila that are offered in varying weight classes, flexes, and launch/spin profiles to suit the needs of any player (see shaft chart below for more details). Each Epic Sub Zero fairway wood has a swing weight of D3.

Ideal For:

Players of all ability levels who value spin and launch control in a fairway wood. It should be noted that the GBB Epic Sub Zero fairway woods are quite forgiving, especially with the heavier weight in the back position, but they’ve been designed to help high-speed players control the ball better to achieve their ideal trajectory and distance. They also have a slightly smaller profile that will make them a bit more workable, an attribute that is likely to appeal to better players. For players simply looking for max distance and high launch conditions, the standard Epic fairway woods would also warrant consideration.

Callaway GBB Epic Fairway Woods at the 2017 PGA Show

TGW gets the inside story of the Callaway GBB Epic Fairway Woods at the 2017 PGA Show.

Triaxial Carbon Crown

Incredibly light triaxial carbon allows for a crown that weighs 78 percent less than a traditional steel crown and enables a low CG placement and higher MOI.

Fourth Generation Hyper Speed Face Cup

A more responsive Face Cup creates higher ball speeds and better preserves that speed on mis-hits.

Aerodynamic Speed Step

Callaway’s proprietary Speed Step on the crown reduces drag to help players effortlessly produce more swing speed.

Interchangeable Sole Weights

Players can adjust their launch angle and spin rate as needed depending on where they position 22- and three-gram weights in the sole.

What They're Saying ...

“The fairway woods don’t have Jailbreak Technology because of the heights of the clubface, but this is the best ball speed producing technology we’ve ever had in a fairway wood. It’s extremely, extremely hot.”

Dave Neville, Callaway Senior Director of Brand Management

“The big thing is the Triaxial Carbon Crown on both of the fairways. When you go from 26 to 5.8 grams, that’s a huge number in terms of being able to get the MOI and ball speeds up.”

Dave Neville, Callaway Senior Director of Brand Management

“The size is slightly smaller, not a ton. From a shaping standpoint it might be more for a little better player but not from a performance standpoint. With the 22-gram weight in the back, the MOI is close to the standard, within 10-15 points.”

Dave Neville, Callaway Senior Director of Brand Management

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great club After swapping the weights so the heavier one was forward, this club feels more solid than any 3 wood I've ever hit. Decreased the loft by a degree and still hit it plenty high. Love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome club. Love this 3 wood, I appreciate not getting charged for the custom shaft. Replaced a Callaway 3 wood, with a softer flex shaft. Great upgrade!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Likes the looks, but not the performance. I really like the way the club looks and sets up, but my 2004 GBB strong 3 still performs better and has held up better. The Epic already shows wear marks and I have only played with it a few times. Sound, feel and distance are better with 2004 GBB fairway metal. The only change I would make in the EPIC is I believe I should of gotten a stiff shaft versus a regular, it may have helped with my distance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent 3 wood This is the very best 3 wood I have ever owned. It is easy to hit. Launches the ball effortlessly off the tee or off the fairway.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Fairway metal This club is by far the best fairway metal I have owned. It consistently gets the ball in the air and a long way down. I'm again hitting par 5's in 2 and even lipped out a Double Eagle. I like it so much I went out and bought the 18 degree to add to the bag. A Must Buy!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product I was looking to replace an old Ping Rapture 3 wood, and that was going to be a tough task. The second I hit the Epic Sub Zero I knew that this was the new gamer for me. I love the ability to set the weights in the head based on the type of ball flight I am looking for on the day, and I love the length I got out of it, as well as the ease of hitting this club. I do have one knock on it. Having a high swing speed I am no stranger to breaking or denting club faces, but that usually comes after a year or two of use. I dented the club face on this in essentially 3 months of use. This could be that we had cold spring in Washington, or maybe I was swinging to hard, or maybe it was just a defective club face. But, for a product at this price point I would expect longer than 3 months of use before something happened to this club. Again, I love the product, and I am excited to get my new club from warranty.
