Q & A

Callaway Men's GBB Epic Irons

The Most Advanced Callaway Irons Ever Made

Epic drivers and fairway woods have been an incredible success for Callaway by delivering players of all ability levels with ball speed increases that have subsequently led to significant distance gains. Even more impressively, Callaway has been able to deliver those additional yards while actually increasing forgiveness in those clubs. Not surprisingly, Callaway engineers had also been working intently on bringing irons to market that could offer the same playability benefits to golfers. In fact, they had been instructed by Callaway brass to go out and create the most advanced irons in golf regardless of the time and costs associated with the project. The result of those efforts, which included contributions from 70 different engineers, are the new GBB Epic and Epic Pro irons. And as the ‘Epic’ name would suggest, these are irons that are producing faster ball speeds for more distance and incredible forgiveness. Keying the ball speed increases are Callaway’s highly successful 360 Face Cup Technology, which enables more ball speed from across the clubface, and the Epic irons’ ExoCage construction, which allows the face to flex more at impact. But the most significant innovation in the Epic irons is a new Tungsten-Infused Standing Wave, as different amounts of Tungsten are injected into the clubhead to alter the CG position of each iron in the set to deliver optimal performance. More specifically, a lower CG placement in the long irons delivers effortless launch and increased carry distance, while a higher CG placement in the short irons promotes a lower, controlled ball flight, which is ideal for scoring shots. In terms of the differences between the Epic standard and Pro model, it really comes down to aesthetics. The Pro version features smaller blade lengths, thinner toplines and soles, and less offset, which visually, as the name would suggest, will likely appeal to better players.

Ideal For:

Golfers of all ability levels. Callaway would categorize its new GBB Epic irons as game-improvement clubs, but these are irons that will fit a wide range of players. While they will provide the incredible distance, launch, and forgiveness that higher-handicappers want and need, the Epic irons still have a clean look and will offer the impressive feel and acoustics that a better player prefers. For those who place a high premium on the ability to work the ball, however, the smaller Epic Pro irons would definitely be worth a look.

Exo-Cage Head Construction

Allows for a stiffer body that in turn enables the clubface to flex more easily for explosive ball speed across the face.

Next-Generation 360 Face Cup

Enables a thinner clubface that also helps produce more ball speed from all impact locations.

Tungsten-Infused Standing Wave

Different amounts of tungsten weighting are incorporated into each iron to influence CG position and optimize performance.

What They're Saying ...

“These are our highest performing irons that we’ve ever designed. You’re going to see more ball speed, there’s a lot of forgiveness built in, (and they) come in both a standard and a pro, so there’s something to fit just about everybody.”

Luke Williams, Callaway Senior Director of Global Product Strategy for Irons

Callaway Men's GBB Epic Irons #4-AW UST Recoil ES 760/780 Stiff Right is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 39.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nothing special here. Been playing these irons for 2 months, about 10 rounds. I see zero improvement in distance, launch and spin. Played Apex CF16, glad I didn't trade them in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love em, looks, feel, and performance... First off, these irons should really be in a whole new category. PGI - Premium Game Improvement. Are there Irons that are longer -yes, But the player needs to be looking for a certain type of statement in the purchase here. Total package - bag appeal, overall looks for a game improvement iron, feel, and performance. This iron delivers all of that. The Epic is a well balanced club, that produces better than average distance, combined with a solid buttery feel, and a high level of forgiveness. Callaway has done an excellent job creating a cavity back iron in a very attractive package. These irons deliver big when struck anywhere around the sweet spot, and if you are in fact a consistent striker of the ball, an easy swing will produce stellar results all the way through the bag. The club face technology shines best when you need to call on your longer irons. It took me a little time to realize with Epic, that I need to let the science and engineering do the job.. The more you free yourself up to let the clubs do the work, the more you will fall in love with these irons. Thanks Callaway for your commitment to excellence!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Go low. I purchased these after injuring my shoulder. I added 10 to 15 yards per iron while hitting them like they have a built in lazor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent set Very light clubs. I can hit a tighter pattern and longer ball with these clubs than anything else. I tested over 8 different sets at the big box store. Got this set and very happy I did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Game Improver I read some of the other reviews and very surprised. For my game, longer - higher and much more forgiving. Little pricey, but worth the $$ given I normally keep my irons for 2-3 years. Only knock is sometimes the sound is strange when hitting a shot but the ball flight still seems to be on target.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love these irons I used Taylormade woods and irons for many years - over 30. I was not happy with the fitting I received for my TM M2 driver so I brought it back and was fitted for an X16 driver. After that, I was hooked on Callaway. I purchased a new Epic Driver, Epic 3 metal and Epic irons. These irons are better than anything I had before (as are the woods). They are long and I really like the weighting. I had them fitted with two degrees upright (and a slightly oversized grip) which is better for my swing. These irons have me swinging smoother and making better contact - which is probably the best compliment I can give. I would never invest in a high end set this this without being fitted. After this experience, I will never buy any set without being fitted.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Scam .5 extra ball speed compared to apex? These are a scam. I bet they were going to replace the Apex (year 2) irons but the apex's were still doing well so callaway did not want to eat the cost and they came up with these "premium clubs". I am a huge callaway fan but do not support this club by any means. very clicky feel and i hit them on my instructors trackman and saw no gains in performance just a massive increase in price.
